President of Azerbaijan receives Latvian Minister of Environment

Baku - APA. On June 25, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received the Latvian delegation headed by Minister of Environment Raymondas Veyonis, press service of the President told APA. Veyonis said the governments of Azerbaijan and Latvia signed an agreement on cooperation in the field environment this morning. He said this agreement would promote further extension of the Latvia-Azerbaijan relations, which were developed in the financial, economic and other fields so far. He noted that the protection of environment has serious character under the conditions of current global climate changes and has a significant impact on our daily life.

The head of state emphasized the importance of extension of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Latvia not only in the economic and political directions, but in the new spheres as well. The president called the protection of environment as a priority for our country and said the Caspian Sea – the areas of oil and gas production demanded special approach from the view of environmental security. The head of state said other territories of Azerbaijan didn’t face with such threats and there were good climate and natural conditions there. He said oil production in Baku and Absheron peninsula had 200-year history, but the environmental issues were not addressed there for long years. “The government of Azerbaijan is planning huge work in this direction”.
