Baku-APA. Turkey's two major opposition parties nominated on Monday former head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu as their joint candidate in the upcoming presidential election, local Daily News reported, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The main opposition parties, the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), announced that they would nominate Ihsanoglu, who served as secretary-general of the OIC from 2005 to 2013, as their joint candidate to run the presidential race in August.

"We propose a name that everyone can agree on and who can serve as a model of dignity, honesty and knowledge," CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu said.

Monday's announcement came after weeks of intense talks between opposition parties that seek to find a candidate capable of challenging Erdogan, who has held power since 2003. MHP leader Devlet Bahceli said his party was "pleased" with the choice.

The two parties still need to officially endorse Ihsanoglu's candidacy, former head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The 71-year-old Ihsanoglu was born in Cairo to Turkish parents. He served as OIC head between 2005 and 2014, and has written several books on Islamic and Turkish culture.
