The Syrian national by the name Muhammad Raghil Al Hardani was apprehended by security forces at the KahramanmaraÅŸ bus station. Hardani was referred to a court which ruled to have him sent to pre-trial detention.
Turkish intelligence reportedly received information that Hardani, who entered Turkey recently from Syria, was planning to initiate a suicide attack and informed the consulate.
Hardani's capture comes at a time when the terrorist group ISIL has decided to dramatically expand its theater of operations from its hub in Syria and Iraq, executing or inspiring a series of attacks across three continents that claimed more than 800 lives this year.
The mayhem created by those attacks -- including the downing of a Russian airliner and a killing spree in the heart of Paris which left over 130 dead -- is said to be the kind of attention that the extremist group thrives on.
Gunmen and bombers attacked restaurants, a concert hall and a sports stadium at locations across Paris in November, killing 129 in a deadly rampage that President François Hollande said amounted to an act of war against France.
ISIL, which has recently lost territory to US-backed coalition forces in Syria and Iraq, seeks to boost its credentials with spectacular acts of violence that attract recruits.
