Suspected Libyan al-Qaeda leader nabbed in Turkey

Baku-APA. Suspected Libyan al-Qaeda leader Abd al-Baset Azzouz was captured in Turkey's western province of Yalova last month, a Turkish daily reported on Thursday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

 

The Milliyet daily reported that Azzouz, 48, was seized on Nov. 13 in a joint operation between Turkish intelligence officers and police and the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

 

The suspected was interrogated about his suspected involvement in the 2012 killing of then-U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and later was sent to the United States on Nov. 24.

 

According to the report, Azzouz was reportedly in possession of a fake Libyan passport when he was captured and was living in a rented house in Yalova.

 

He is now expected to stand trial for his alleged involvement in the murder of Stevens and three U.S. staff members during an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
