Baku-APALithuania's current minister of health has been designated as a candidate to take an office in the new European Commission (EC), according to the ruling social democratic party of the country on Thursday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Vytenis Andriukaitis, minister of health and deputy chairman of the party, has been backed by his party allies for his solid political experience and good knowledge of European issues.

"We hope that he will perfectly fulfill these duties. He is one of those in Lithuania who know European issues at their best," Algirdas Butkevicius, Prime Minister and head of social democratic party, told local media on Thursday in Vilnius, after meeting of the ruling party's board.

He did not speculate on who could overtake the ministry of health in Lithuania if Andriukaitis' candidacy is approved in Brussels.

"Without any doubts, it is a complex decision," said Andriukaitis about his possible departure from the minister's office.

Andriukaitis mentioned health care, social issues and consumer policy among possible areas in the EC that he would wish to be in charge of.

Algirdas Semeta, currently Lithuania's commissioner in the EU, is in charge of taxation, customs, statistics, audit and anti-fraud.

According to the legislation, the candidate to the EC is proposed by the national government, after getting approval from the president and following consultations with the parliament.

The European Commission, made of 28 commissioners from each EU country, is the EU's executive body.
