Baku-APA. The law prohibiting the sale of energy drinks to those under 18 years old has come into force in Lithuania on Saturday, APA reports quoting local media.
Lithuania became the first EU country imposing restrictions on sale of energy drinks.
According to the law, those selling energy drinks to minors will face a fine of 200 to 400 litas (about 72 to 145 U.S. dollars). Persons buying energy drinks for youth may be fined up to 200 litas.
According to the law, energy drinks are considered as all non-alcoholic drinks having more than 150 milligrams of caffeine per litre.
After a few years of political discussions the law was adopted by the Seimas, Lithuania's Parliament, in May.
Restrictions were initiated by Dangute Mikutiene, Labor Party's Member of Parliament and the chairwoman of the parliamentary Committee on Health. (1 U.S. dollar = 2.76 litas)
