Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Tuesday that Napolitano will quit "in the coming hours," describing the Italian president as a "committed European.”
The Italian parliament will reportedly start voting on Napolitano's successor within two weeks.
Renzi said the successor should be "a very high-level figure."
Senate speaker, Pietro Grasso, will act as temporary president until Napolitano's successor is elected.
During a valedictory speech almost two weeks ago, the 89-year-old president described his nine years tenure as "long and tormented," adding that he was "happy to go back home."
Napolitano has been acting as the president of Italy since 2006.
