Baku-APA. Germany views a quick implementation of Ukraine's peace settlement plan as a way to achieve a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine, a spokesman of the German government said on Monday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
"All sides, including anti-government forces in Ukraine, should adhere to the peace plan by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko," German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said.
Russia should exert its influence on anti-government forces "in an audible and visible way," Seibert added.
The spokesman said Russia and Ukraine should work together to secure the border between the two countries, for example, through joint border controls and a coordination mechanism.
Poroshenko announced Friday a week-long unilateral ceasefire plan aiming at peacefully resolving the conflict in Ukraine's eastern regions, calling on rebels to lay down weapons and start peace talks with the Kiev government.
The Ukrainian president also unveiled proposals for the peace plan involving power decentralization, early elections and creation of a 10 km buffer zone on the Ukrainian-Russian border.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a statement issued late Saturday, said he welcomed the ceasefire and Poroshenko's "intention to take other concrete steps to reach a peaceful settlement."
In a telephone conversation with Putin, Poroschenko as well as French President Francois Hollande over the weekend, German Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed Ukraine's efforts to seek a peaceful solution to its crisis, urging all sides to follow Poroschenko's peace plan and calling for political dialogue in the country.
The insurgency in the largely Russian-speaking eastern part of Ukraine erupted in April after street protests in the capital city of Kiev toppled former President Viktor Yanukovich.
