Baku-APA. European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic responsible for Energy Union here on Wednesday welcomed Ukraine's Naftogaz paying the first tranche of its debt to Russian's Gazprom, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
"With winter at the doorstep, it is essential that gas flow from Russia to Ukraine can be restarted. This is an important step in order to secure gas flows for citizens and business in Ukraine and in the European Union alike," Sefcovic said in a statement after Naftogaz said it transferred the first tranche of 1.45 billion U.S. dollars to Gazprom.
After seven rounds of negotiations, the trilateral gas talks between Russia and Ukraine, moderated by the European Commission, yielded a breakthrough on Oct. 30, in which the Ukrainian side agreed to make the first payment without delay, and 1.65 billion U.S. dollars by the end of the year.
