Baku-APA. A wave of extreme weather with strong winds and torrential rain has claimed at least six lives and many injured people in Italy, local media said on Monday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
A 51-year-old farmer, Rocco Montorro, was killed when an eucalyptus crushed his car near Gioia Tauro, a city of southern Italy. Two other people were reported dead in similar ways also in southern Italy, while a citizen died when his car was swept into a river in central Italy.
The last two accidents occurred in northern Italy. A 50-year-old man was reportedly drowned after slipping into a river and a woman of the same age was killed by a slab of snow which fell from a roof, dragging down rocks with it.
Many people were also injured throughout the country. Among them was an 8-year-old boy who was hit by a downed tree in Calabria region, southern Italy, and two skiers were pulled out alive by rescue teams after being swept away by an avalanche which engulfed a slope near the resort town of
Canazei in northeastern Italy. They were not in a critical conditions, according to first reports.
Firefighters were sent out on hundreds of calls overnight in various parts of the country, due to many downed trees which scattered debris and caused damage.
Road traffic was hampered in several localities. In the southern region of Puglia, heavy winds caused a tree to fall onto train tracks and temporarily blocked regional transport.
Winds were reported to have reached speeds of as much as 70 km per hour in Naples, whose airport was forced to cancel or reroute a number of flights. In nearby Pozzuoli the local authorities ordered all schools to stay closed on Monday. Sea connections were also temporarily interrupted in the area.
The Italian civil protection issued a new weather alert late on Monday, warning of a fresh wave of rain and strong winds particularly across southern regions.
