Latvia’s Foreign Minister said the west needed a long-term strategy to contain Russia as Moscow would seek new targets irrespective of the outcome of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, APA reports citing The Financial Times.

Krišjānis Kariņš, a former Latvian prime minister and self-declared candidate to head NATO, told the Financial Times that Russia had an “imperialistic-fuelled ideology” which meant that the threat from Moscow would persist even under a new president or if Ukraine regained all its territory.

“Russia will not stop, Russia can only be stopped. Stopping Russia in Ukraine does not mean that it is over. It simply means we will have to continue. That is what is important for NATO: that we will have to work on a long-term strategy of Russia containment,” Kariņš said.

"We have to make sure on the NATO side that the likelihood of any incidents is simply ruled out, by our resolve, by our investments in defence,” he added.
