Mikheil Kavelashvili has been elected as Georgia's 6th president, APA's Tbilisi correspondent reports.
Georgia's Central Election Commission has completed the vote count for today's election held in the parliament. Out of 225 members of the Electoral College who participated, 224 supported the candidacy of Mikheil Kavelashvili, a 53-year-old former footballer and co-founder of the ruling party's "People's Power" faction.
Opposition parties, which have declared that they do not recognize the legitimacy of the election, did not participate in the process. Georgia's incumbent president, Salome Zourabichvili, also stated that she does not recognize the parliament or the presidential election as legitimate and will continue her term.
The inauguration ceremony for the new president is scheduled for December 29.
