The German government approved a bill on Tuesday that aims to increase conscription in the army, APA reports, citing Reuters.
The bill envisages voluntary service at the initial stage, but if necessary, compulsory conscription, which was suspended in 2011, may be restored.
It should be noted that Germany intends to increase the number of personnel in the army from 180,000 to 260,000 by the early 2030s.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's cabinet will approve a bill on Wednesday that aims to increase conscription in the army, APA reports, citing Bloomberg.
The move is part of a response to new security risks arising from Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
It was noted that the new law initially envisages voluntary service, but if necessary, compulsory conscription, which was suspended in 2011, could be restored. The law will enter into force in January next year after passing the parliament.
