Malta's parliament unanimously approved Myriam Spiteri Debono as the country's new president on Wednesday, APA reports.

Spiteri Debono, 71, is to replace outgoing President George Vella whose five-year term in office ends on April 4. Spiteri Debono will be Malta's 11th president.

This is the first time in Malta's history that a new president has been chosen through a parliamentary motion requiring a two-thirds majority, following changes in the country's constitution in 2020.

Spiteri Debono, who will be the third female president, was proposed by Prime Minister Robert Abela and seconded by opposition leader Bernard Grech.

Spiteri Debono obtained a degree in English literature and linguistics from the University of Malta and eventually graduated as a notary.
