Berlin-APA. One of two members still in prison from the left-wing Red Army Faction that terrorised West Germany in the 1970s has been released after 26 years behind bars.
The release of Christian Klar, in jail since 1982, was ordered last month after he served the minimum 26 years of his life sentence on nine counts of murder and 11 counts of attempted murder.
After Baader, Meinhof and other founder members were arrested in 1972, Klar and Brigitte Mohnhaupt took over the leadership of the group and embarked on a campaign of terrorism that shook West Germany. Mohnhaupt was released from prison in March 2007 after serving 24 years for her role in nine murders.
On 7 April, 1977 they murdered federal prosecutor Siegfried Buback, shot dead by a man on a motorbike with a machine gun along with his driver and a colleague as his Mercedes waited at traffic lights.
