According to the law on cooperation with International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Karadzic was taken before the investigative judge of Serbia’s war crimes court. Representatives of the International Tribunal estimated this event as a crucial moment in the investigation of war crimes in the territory of former Yugoslavia during 1990s, because Karadzic topped the tribunal’s most-wanted list together with General Ratko Mladic, commander of Bosnian Serb army and Goran Hadzic, “president” of unrecognized “Serbian Republic” in the territory of Croatia. Mladic and Hadzic were already arrested. The Hague Tribunal demands Serbia to hand over these persons accused in the crimes against mankind.
Karadzic is charged with organizing the war crimes against Bosnian Muslims in 1992-1995, particularly the 1995 massacre of up to 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica. He was officially charged on July 25, 1995 and has been wanted since that time.
