Polish president discusses economy in official visit to Portugal

Baku-APA. The economy was the main focus during a meeting between Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva and his Polish counterpart Bronislaw Komorowski on Thursday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"In the current situation, we need to control our expenses. The cohesion funds are very important to the less developed countries of the European Union," Komorowski said, alluding to his efforts to extend EU cohesion funds beyond 2013 to help the poorer countries of the bloc catch up with the richer ones.

In his speech, President Cavaco Silva stressed the political importance of the EU. "We need a strong, cohesive Europe with a relevant voice in the international arena so we can attend the multiple aspirations of the European citizens," he said.

Portugal currently has a surplus of international trade with Poland. having exported 292 million euros worth of goods and services in 2010 and imported 263 million euros. Portuguese companies have large investments in Poland, totaling 1.5 billion euros. There are more than 100 Portuguese companies in Poland, including the largest supermarket network in the country and the sixth largest financial institution.

During his two-day official visit, the Polish president will attend a Portugal-Poland economic forum and meet with the mayors of Lisbon and Oporto.
