Baku-APA. Turkish President Abdullah Gul said Friday that the peace process launched by Kofi Annan, the UN- Arab League special envoy to Syria, was a great opportunity for the unrest-hit Middle East country, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
Gul told reporters here that it will be great for everyone if the process initiated by Annan succeeds. He added that it was necessary to make good use of this process.
On Thursday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey has been supporting Annan since the beginning and will continue to support him.
"In order to get a result in Syria, tanks must be withdrawn from cities," Erdogan said.
The UN-brokered truce went into effect at 6 a.m. Damascus time (GMT 0300) on Thursday. Opposition activists said the situation across Syria was calm in the hours that followed the deadline.
However, the Syrian government accused the opposition of breaking the cease-fire and its permanent representative at the UN cited eight attacks by the opposition in Syria on Thursday.
