Sarkozy expects France to apply for host of 2024 Olympics

Baku-APA. French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday expressed his hopes for France to be a candidate to host the Summer Olympics in 2024, APA reports quoting local media.

"We will not be a candidate systematically, we are here to win. To win you have to be legitimate, to be legitimate it must have a good time," said Sarkozy, a great sports fan.

"To me, 2024 is good for application," said the French president and the candidate for re-election at a meeting with athletes, officials and club leaders in Domont during a visit to the Val d’Oise, the north of Paris, who recalled that 2024 would be the date of the centenary of the last Summer Olympics held in France in 1924.

The French president urged that "we must now professionalize our applications, it is France that must choose, to make every thing very professional."

Paris, host city of 1900 and 1924 Olympics, has tried three times to accommodate a third edition of the largest global sporting event.

In 1985, Spain’s Barcelona was the favorite for the 1992 games. In 2001, Beijing, the capital of China, was designated for the 2008 games. In 2005, Paris suffered a new setback, the International Olympic Committee pointing London to organize the 2012 Olympics.
