Greek PM confirms snap elections to be held on May 6: media
Papademos made the announcement in the afternoon during a final cabinet meeting and a visit to President Karolos Papoulias shortly before the latter formally dissolve the parliament and call the polls, local media reported.
Papademos officially handed over to Papoulias his interim five-month old coalition government’s mandate, Greek national broadcaster NET and Greek national news agency AMNA reported, and is due to address the nation in a televised address later on Wednesday.
Addressing the cabinet meeting, Papademos asked his ministers and political parties to continue efforts to overcome the acute debt crisis that hit Greece in late 2009.
"The next administration will have to make decisions promptly in order to complete the efforts to revive our economy," he stressed, according to media reports.
The elections will be the first since the start of the debt crisis that threatened the country with a disorderly default that could have a significant impact on the eurozone and global economy.
With the support of the socialists of former prime minister George Papandreou and the conservatives of New Democracy, Papademos’ administration took over last November with a limited task to secure a second rescue loans package agreement wit international lenders to avoid a catastrophic default.
However, due to the harsh salary and pension cuts, record high unemployment and other unpopular policies, the two main pro-reform parties have seen their popularity plummeting.
Greece has depended on multi-billion euro bailout support from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union in exchange of the painful measures to slash deficits and restore development since May 2010.
