Baku-APA. Lebanese President Michel Sleiman met Saturday with visiting Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, thanking Italy for its active and essential contribution to peacekeeping operations of the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon ( UNIFIL), APA reports citing the state-run National News Agency.

Sleiman also valued Italy’s ongoing support to Lebanon and the bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

For his part, the Italian Prime Minister, who started his visit in Lebanon on Saturday for discussions over bilateral relations in various fields, stressed Italy’s continuous support to Lebanon and highlighted the importance of boosting economic, investment and trade relations between the two countries.

Monti visited later Saturday his country’s troops deployed with the UNIFIL at Shamaa in southern Lebanon.

"Italy is a leading contributor to the UNIFIL. Prime Minister Monti’s visit is yet another proof of the continued commitment of Italy and the international community as a whole to UNIFIL’s mission. This is very much appreciated," UNIFIL head of Mission and Force Commander Maj. Gen. Paolo Serra said.

Earlier on Saturday, Monti said that his country has no intention to reduce participating peacekeepers in the UNIFIL.

Italy currently has more than 1,100 military personnel serving in UNIFIL and also provides four helicopters for air support to the mission.
