Baku-APA. The governing Fidesz Party and its tiny ally, the Christian Democratic People’s Party, on Monday evening asked Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to nominate a new president on April 16.

Speaking after a meeting of the two parties’ deputies, Fidesz parliamentary group leader Janos Lazar said that after President Pal Schmitt’s resignation, the governing parties had consulted with the opposition to conclude that Hungary needs a new president as soon as possible.

Pal Schmitt resigned earlier on Monday amidst a two-month- scandal that peaked when his doctoral thesis was revoked last week for plagiary. He took office in August 2010 after being elected to office by the Fidesz-controled parliament, and signed every law submitted to him without question

Hungary’s parliament accepted his resignation with a vote of 338 in favor, 5 opposed and 6 abstentions on Monday afternoon.

Under Hungarian law, a new president must be chosen by parliament within 30 days. During the interim, Speaker of the Parliament Laszlo Kover will handle the presidential duties.

One opposition party, the far-right Jobbik, has already proposed presidential elections through a popular vote instead of by parliament, while the Socialist MSZP party is recommending a four-fifths majority in choosing the new president. Under current law, a two-thirds majority of the Members of Parliament is desirable, but if that cannot be attained, a simple majority is sufficient in the third round of balloting.

Given that the governing parties hold a two-thirds veto-proof majority in the parliament, the rules are unlikely to be changed and their handpicked candidate is likely to be elected.
