Poor roads, old vehicles, and drivers who buy driving licenses on the black market are often blamed for traffic accidents which are almost routine in Peru. According to official statistics, traffic accidents claim lives of almost 4,000 people annually, about 50,000 receive injuries.

Traffic accidents also put additional strain on the country’s economy, inflicting economic losses of about $1 billion annually.
