Baku-APA. A total of 22 fires broke out in southern Italy on Saturday, mainly caused by the elevated temperatures, APA reports quoting news.xinhuanet.com website.

The civil protection unit, responsible for all calamities hitting the country, said in a statement that it had intervened to extinguish the flames with fire-fighter planes and helicopters.

The majority of fires struck the island-region of Sicily (14), while two occurred in the Latium region. According to the civil protection, a great part of the flames were ignited by human action.

The weather alarm in Italy remains high for the entire weekend, when many Italians will be leaving for the August summer break.

The northern and central regions continue to be battered by heavy windstorms. On Friday a tornado hit the Liguria region, destroying several beach facilities and flooding cities.
