“I once again say as a president that we prefer goodwill relations with our neighbours. These relations must firstly be based on respect to our national interest, territorial integrity. The negotiations conducting by Georgian government with Gazprom must be transparent. We must get rid of soft power observed in our relations with the neighbouring country and coordinate to our Western partners. It’s needed to understand that the subject of negotiations with Gazprom is not only an energy”, the president said.
Georgia’s main gas supplier is Azerbaijan. Along with this, 12% of gas consumed in Georgia is transported by Russia. The matter is about transit fee for gas transported from Russia to Armenia through Georgia. Georgian government is conducting negotiations with Gazprom for increase of gas transported by Russia. But Georgian opposition protests to it, noting that this is a threat to Georgian energy security.
