Azerbaijan is strengthening its role as a regional green energy hub, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana said in a video address to the 31st Baku Energy Forum, APA-Economics reports.
According to her, Central Asia possesses abundant renewable energy resources, including solar, wind and hydropower, as well as a strategic geographical position connecting major energy markets.
A. S. Alisjahbana noted that accelerating the region’s energy transition requires increased investment in renewable energy projects, modernization of electricity grids, the creation of a favorable environment for private investment, and the development of cross-border electricity trade.
She said that platforms aimed at interconnecting regional power grids and facilitating knowledge exchange could help reduce costs, expand renewable energy projects and attract investment.
The UN official stated that the Baku Energy Forum serves as an important platform for bringing together governments, international financial institutions and development partners to accelerate the energy transition. She added that the APREC initiative unveiled in Baku during COP29 is of significant importance for strengthening regional cooperation and unlocking Central Asia’s energy potential.
“I am pleased to announce the launch of the Roadmap for Azerbaijan on Sustainable Development Goal 7. This document covers priorities such as improving energy efficiency, advancing electromobility and positioning Azerbaijan as a regional green energy hub,” A. S. Alisjahbana emphasized.
She also thanked Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) for organizing the forum and expressed confidence in its successful outcome.
