Azerbaijan has a very large potential in the field of onshore solar energy. This potential is estimated at approximately 135 gigawatts, said Deputy Energy Minister Orkhan Zeynalov during an event held within the framework of Baku Energy Week, APA-Economics reports.
“We are also pleased to be working on opportunities for the development of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in selected cities and regions of Azerbaijan,” the deputy minister noted.
According to him, the government has declared Karabakh, Eastern Zangezur and Nakhchivan as green energy zones. Rooftop solar energy programs are also an integral part of this development strategy.
“We are pleased that the preliminary results of this study are very promising. Technical assessments indicate that there is approximately 9.4 gigawatts of potential for the installation of rooftop solar panels. The total clean energy generation potential is estimated at 11.8 gigawatts.
We look forward to working together with the World Bank on implementing the next phases of this study, engaging market participants and expanding cooperation with potential investors,” the deputy minister emphasized.
He stated that there are significant business and investment opportunities for rooftop solar energy projects in Azerbaijan’s major cities, including Baku, Nakhchivan, Aghdam, Jabrayil, Khankendi, Shusha, Julfa, Gubadli and Zangilan. In addition, this initiative may be expanded to include other cities in the future.
“We believe that green energy zones will create a strong foundation for the future transition to net-zero emissions and support the government’s efforts in the field of green energy transition. This transition will be balanced, fair and ambitious, while also creating new opportunities for the private sector,” Orkhan Zeynalov said.
