Peter Semneby meets with opposition leaders

Baku. Elnur Mammadliâ€“APA. EU Special Representative on the South Caucasus Peter Semneby, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, met with a group of opposition leaders on Tuesday, Chairman of Umid Party Igbal Agazadeh told APA. Musavat leader Isa Gambar, ADP chairman Sardar Jalaloglu and president of Public Forum for Azerbaijan Eldar Namazov have also attended the meeting. They have discussed preparations for 2008 presidential elections, socio-political situation in the pre-election period, preparations of the parties and other issues. Agazadeh said they held wide discussions on the amendments to the Electoral Code, pressure on media and pre-election situation in the country. â€œThe diplomat was informed that newly-adopted amendments to the Electoral Code, rejecting of defamation law, gaps in the laws on political parties and Freedom of Assembly and other problems will have serious negative impact on the election processâ€. In his turn Semneby said that it would be first election after the signing of Action Plan within the European Neighborhood Policy and it is important for the European Union as well.
