US President Donald Trump’s decision to halt the introduction of new sanctions against Russia has drawn criticism from both Republicans and Democrats in Congress.

According to The Washington Post, Trump signed an executive order delaying the entry into force of a sweeping sanctions package against Russia, citing US national interests.

Republican Senator John Cornyn sharply criticised the move, saying concessions to Russia ran counter to US national security interests.

Fellow Republican Senator Thom Tillis described Trump’s decision as extremely irresponsible. He stressed that concessions to Moscow while it continued the war in Ukraine were unacceptable.

Democratic senators also opposed the decision, warning that easing economic pressure on Russia would negatively affect Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also criticised the suspension.

The decision concerns new restrictions that were due to take effect. It does not lift all previously imposed sanctions against Russia.
