The European Union increased its imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the first nine months of this year despite commitments to reduce its energy dependence on Moscow.

EU ports received 12.18 million tonnes of Russian LNG between January and September, The Times reported, citing a report by German environmental organisation Urgewald.

The imports were worth €7.88 billion, up 9.5% compared with the same period last year.

According to the report, French ports accounted for approximately three-quarters of the imports.

Russia’s share of total EU gas imports has fallen significantly since the war in Ukraine began. However, figures available as of May showed that Russia still supplied 12% of the bloc’s LNG imports.

Russian LNG is mainly delivered to France, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands, while pipeline gas reaches Hungary, Slovakia and Greece.

The EU’s ban on short-term contracts for Russian gas has already entered into force. A ban on long-term LNG contracts is planned for the end of the year, while restrictions on pipeline gas imports are expected to take effect by September 2027.
