Turkish citizen elected president of CE Congress of Local and Regional Authorities

APAâ€™s Europe bureau reports that on the first day of the session new presidents and vice-presidents were elected to the two chambers and chairman were elected to four commissions. Former President of the Chamber of Regions Yavuz Mildon was elected president of CE Congress of Local and Regional Authorities. The Bureau of the Congress passed a decision on the participation of northern Cyprus Turks in the plenary sittings. Ian Micallef President of the Chamber of Local Authorities touching on the procedure of election and participation of delegations said that in such countries like Azerbaijan and Albania procedure of electing the delegations has not been specified yet, and this contradicts the Statute of the Congress.
The two-day session will cover the debates on improving the integration of migrants through local housing policy, integration and participation of young people at local and regional level, social approach to the fight against racism at local and regional level, intercultural and interreligious dialogue as an opportunity for local democracy. The participants will also exchange views on the state of local democracy in Greece, Ukraine and Serbia. Azerbaijani delegation attending the session includes Rauf Aliyev, Anar Ibrahimov, Yazgul Rzayeva, Abulfaz Babayev, Ilham Khalilov and Shamistan Yusifov.
Yavuz Mildon, who was elected the 26th president of CE Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, is the citizen of Turkey. He was born in 1955. Having graduated in economics from the University of Istanbul, Yavuz Mildon specialised in the food-processing sector. He was President of the Gelibolu Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1988 to 1992. In 1995 he was elected chairman of Provincial Council of Canakkle. He was President of the Chamber of Regions of the Congress from 2004 to 2008. Yavuz Mildon is married, has two children.
