YAP organizes roundtable on 90th anniversary of Azerbaijan Peopleâ€™s Republic

Deputy Chairman, Executive Secretary of YAP Ali Ahmadov said Azerbaijan established the first democratic republic in the east 90 years ago. He said that the flag, hymn and emblem adopted at that time were kept as a sacred value. Professor of Baku State University Anar Isgandarov said the struggle for Azerbaijanâ€™s independence in 1918 united all people. He noted that for the first time the name of Azerbaijan was politicized as the name of state from geographical place. The historian regarded the establishment of the National Army, declaration of Azerbaijani as the official language, formation of parliament and establishment of Azerbaijan State University as important events. Other historian Karim Shukurov had a critical approach to the developments, he said the parliament was not elected by the people at that time, and therefore the parliament made a decision to hand over the power to Bolsheviks on April 27, 1920.
Chairman of Citizen Solidarity Part Sabir Rustamkhanli said historical issues did not need political approach.
â€œWe want the work started by Azerbaijan Peopleâ€™s Republic to be continued. There is no identical view on the republic. There are monuments like tombstones only in some European countries in honor of the republic. But these monuments could have been more magnificent. Genocide monument has not been erected either. Taking the memory stone from the place, where monument is to be erected to Rasulzade and establishing a fountain is disrespect to the republic,â€ he said.
Chairman of Great Establishment Party Fazil Gazanfaroghlu said a nation should own its history with its mistakes and truths. The participants expressed their views on the theme.
