The Middle Corridor is increasing its significance as an alternative and safe transit route for countries located in the center of Eurasia, said Rovshan Rustamov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways JSC (ADY), during the plenary session of the Council of Railway Transport of the CIS countries held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
“I should note that in the 10 months of the current year, Azerbaijan Railways has received 317 block trains on the Middle Corridor, 119 of which are transit trains. This indicator represents a 32% increase compared to the same period last year,” Rovshan Rustamov noted.
According to him, the work carried out within the framework of the North–South transport corridor further strengthens Azerbaijan’s role as a strategic link connecting trade flows in the north and south directions in the region. By the end of this year, the reconstruction of the Sumgayit–Yalama railway line, one of the important sections of the corridor passing through the territory of Azerbaijan, will be completed. In addition, Azerbaijan Railways has carried out extensive work on the construction of the terminal in Astara, Iran, and the construction of the terminal will be completed in the first quarter of 2026.
“Since February of this year, the Baku International Sea Trade Port has been integrated into Azerbaijan Railways. Its expansion and transformation into a modern logistics center is an important component of the comprehensive transport strategy.
“Today, the Baku port is one of the main hubs ensuring the integration of not only Azerbaijan but the entire region into the global trade chain. The port’s infrastructure capabilities, digital management system, and ‘green port’ concept contribute to the optimisation of cargo flows between Europe and Asia. Together with the Alat Logistics Zone, the port serves as a key pillar for the sustainable and efficient operation of the Middle Corridor,” Rovshan Rustamov emphasized.
