"Suggestion of Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev on the establishment of territorial zones, fishing zones and common areas on the Caspian Sea won support of all five Caspian littoral countries," said Kazakh FM Yerzhan Kazykhanov, APA reports quoting “Kazinformâ€.
The working groups work now on this proposal.
According to the Minister, the legal status of the Caspian Sea may be determined already in the foreseeable future.
The legal status of the Caspian Sea after USSR’s collapse has not been still determined because of disagreement of the littoral countries. In 2003, the littoral countries signed a framework agreement on protection of marine environment of the Caspian Sea.
