Ousted Moscow mayor accepts academic job

Baku-APA. Former Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov ousted by President Dmitry Medvedev last week has accepted a job as the dean of a department in the Moscow International University (IUM), the institution’s official website reported on Tuesday, APA reports quoting news.xinhuante.com website.
Luzhkov will head the university’s department for big cities management, the website said.
Previously Luzhkov bore the title of Honorary Professor of the IUM. He initiated the creation of the department in 2002.
Immediately upon his resignation, Luzhkov said he was going to found a political movement for the rights of pensioners and intelligentsia.
Gavriil Popov, head of the IUM, has been Luzhkov’s boss once. In the early 1990s, Popov chaired Moscow’s city council and later a City Hall. Luzhkov used to work as Popov’s deputy and took over the mayor’s post after Popov voluntary stepped down in 1992.
IUM was founded in 1991 by then-President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev and former U.S. President George Bush as a joint educational project called Soviet-American University. Later it changed its name.
