Ruling Republican Party wins municipal elections in Armenia

Yerevan –APA. Armenia’s ruling Republican Party won the municipal election in Yerevan, APA reports. 47 percent of the voters supported the candidates of the ruling party. Right-centrist Party of Prosperous Armenia (22.17%) and Armenian National Congress led by former president Levon Ter-Petrosian (17.41%) will also take seats in the Council of Elders. This was first election to Yerevan Mayor’s office in the history of Armenia. 65-seat Council of Elders of Yerevan was elected on the basis of proportional system. Leader of the winning party will be elected the Yerevan Mayor. According to the present results, leader of the Republican Party Gagik Beglarian was elected the Mayor of capital city.

The opposition parties said there was number of violations during the elections, including pressure upon the journalists and opposition representatives, participation of the voters coming from other regions in the voting, violation of the right of open ballot. The government said the elections were democratic.
