The Standard & Poor's 500 index soared 22.40 points to 1,675.02, a 1.4% jump that put it above its all-time closing high of 1,669.16 set on May 21. The Nasdaq composite index jumped 57.55 points, or 1.6%, to 3,578.30, keeping the tech-laden index at 12-year highs.
In Europe, benchmark indexes closed higher. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.6%, closing at 6,543.41. Germany's DAX 30 index rose 1.1%, closing at 8,158.80 and France's CAC 40 index was up 0.7% at 3,868.98.
