Baku. Vahab Rzayev - APA-Economics. By close, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 143.28 points, or 1.64 percent, to 8,599.18. The Standard & Poor’s 500 fell 2.13 percent, 19.38 points, to 890.35. The Nasdaq composite index lost 45.42 points, 2.81 percent, to 1,571.59.
The dollar was mixed. The euro fell to $1.3453, compared to Thursday’s $1.3726. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar fell to 90.37 yen from Thursday’s 91.17 yen.
The U.S. jobless rate rose more than forecast to 7.2 percent last month, a 15-year high, from 6.8 percent, according to a Labor Department report.
Germany’s DAX 30 fell about 2% to 4783.890 and France’s CAC 40 dropped 0.8% to 3299.50.
In London, the FTSE 100 slipped 1.3% to 4448.54 after a report by the National Institute for Economic and Social Research said the U.K. economy contracted 1.5% in the final quarter of 2008. Anglo American and Rio Tinto fell more than 5%.
