"We are calling for the United States to provide better weapons to the People’s Protection Unit (YPG) of northern Syria.… It has been noted that airstrikes from the West are not enough to stop ISIS (ISIL) from their goal,” the petition said.
Over 34,000 people have signed the petition by Monday afternoon. If the figure reaches 100,000 by November 7, the White House will be obliged to give an official response.
“Evidently, ISIS (ISIL) is a threat to humanity. Due to the fact that YPG is highly outgunned by ISIS with looted weapons, YPG is unable to stop the…[Takfiri group]. It is undoubted that with better and more modern weapons, YPG would efficiently halt ISIS’ motives to gain control of Kobani,” the petition pointed out.
The border city is still under ISIL fire despite more than two weeks of airstrikes by the US-led coalition on the militants' positions.
The head of the Kobani Governing Council says that US-led campaign has failed to prevent ISIL militants from advancing toward the key town bordering Turkey.
On Sunday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed great concern over the situation in and around the Syrian border town and called on the international community to prevent a potential “massacre” of civilians in Syria's Kobani.
The UN has warned that hundreds of civilians in the northern town are facing the risk of being massacred, if the militants sever the sole escape route to the border with Turkey.
On Monday, Kurdish fighters were reported to be successfully holding off ISIL Takfiri militants in Kobani, preventing the terrorists from advancing into the heart of the besieged Syrian Kurdish town.
The ISIL militants have taken over dozens of Kurdish villages in the vicinity of Kobani.
Over 500 people have been killed in Kobani. Nearly 200,000 people have been forced to take refuge in Turkey since the ISIL attacks started in mid-September.
