The President noted that it is remarkable and historic day in the life of the country: "Today we gathered for the opening of the largest mosque in Azerbaijan - Heydar mosque. I cordially congratulate you and the people of Azerbaijan on this occasion. Believers, public figures, representatives came here today from all parts of the country to participate in this ceremony. Our guests are also muftis of the North Caucasus. I cordially greet them. I express my appreciation that they accepted my invitation to participate in today's ceremony. Their participation in this ceremony is another proof of the unity of Muslims of the Caucasus.
According to President Aliyev, it is a historic event, showing the dynamics of the development of Azerbaijan and its commitment to national, religious traditions: "This mosque is named after the great leader Heydar Aliyev and this is natural. Heydar Aliyev is a great personality. He served the people of Azerbaijan with dignity at all times. Under his leadership, in Soviet times in the 1970-1980s, there was a process of great development in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan became a leading republic. Great industrial potential created in those years serves the successful development of Azerbaijan. At the time of independence, the great leader had invaluable services to the people.
The Head of the State reminded that during Heydar Aliyev’s leadership more than 500 mosques were built in Azerbaijan: "Hundreds of mosques were repaired. A great leader prayed inside the sacred Kaaba. I am glad that I was lucky to do so. The attention that has been paid to national, religious values in those years intended to strengthen Azerbaijan today. Therefore today we have a strong economy. We have strong political foundations. And most important, in the community have a common approach, a common position for development of our country. Socio-political situation is positive and of course, the relationship between state and religion plays a great role in this."
Aliyev said that Azerbaijan's policy is based on national interests: "In countries where policy is based on national interests, will have stability and development. I have repeatedly said, I want to repeat in this beautiful mosque, named after the great leader that Azerbaijan is on the path of independence, pursues an independent policy, solves own issues. For me, as the President, the main task is to justify the confidence of the people, serve the people. I have repeatedly called for it all public officials, gave them my instructions. I said, we are all, first the president, are the servants of the people. This is our task. Azerbaijan has all freedoms - freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of conscience. This area seems to me, is very important in our overall development. Religious freedom is fully provided in Azerbaijan.
The President noted that over the past 11 years around 250 mosques have been built or repaired in Azerbaijan: “Shrines of other religions in Azerbaijan are built, repaired, with public funds. The state had its support in the construction and repair of Russian Orthodox, Catholic, the Albanian churches. Azerbaijan builds, repairs synagogue. Azerbaijan gained unique experience in this field. It is natural for us, as it is a normal way of life for us, our society. At the same time this is our state policy. Azerbaijan has fully secured safety and positive social climate. In Azerbaijan, the representatives of all the peoples and faiths and religions live and will live as one family. "
