Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham on Saturday denounced the attacks and underlined the need for global support for the Iraqi government and nation in the fight against terrorism.

“By taking advantage of the situation in the region and double standards applied by some countries to terrorism and extremism, terrorists have intensified their inhumane acts in Iraq, and now seek to disrupt the process of the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country,” she said.

The Iranian official expressed hope that Iraq would continue its path toward stability, security and development through national solidarity.

On Friday, multiple blasts ripped through an election campaign rally held for the Shia political party, Asaib Ahel al-Haq, ahead of the April 30 parliamentary elections.

The rally was attended by thousands of people.

More than 9,000 candidates will vie for 328 seats in the elections.

The elections mark Iraq’s first parliamentary vote since the United States withdrew its forces from the country in late 2011.
