Baku-APA. Iran's Foreign Ministry congratulated Iraq on Tuesday for the nomination of Haidar al- Abadi as the new prime minister of the country, APA reports quoting Press TV.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran supports all steps taken toward the completion of the political process in Iraq," Iran's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Iran felicitates Iraq on the successful appointment of a parliament speaker, president and prime minister within the timeframe set out in the country's constitution, the statement was cited as saying by Press TV.

Iran has underscored that the appointment of a new prime minister and formation of the Iraqi government should be based on the country's constitution, guidelines of the highest religious authorities and national consensus, the statement said.

"It is obvious that the Islamic Republic of Iran as in the past will continue its support for the Iraqi government and nation in fighting terrorism and promoting the country's stability and security," it added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said his country backs Iraqi President Fuad Masum's recent choice for the prime minister position.

The Iraqi outgoing Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who is blamed by his rivals and some of his allies for the recent tensions in the Arab state, has lost Shiite-governed Iran's support for him.

The nomination of al-Abadi, which will end Maliki's eight-year rule as the prime minister, was censured by Maliki on Monday.
