Baku-APA.  Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Ali Shamkhani says the country supports the legal process for the nomination of Haider al-Abadi as the new Iraqi Prime Minister, APA reports quoting Press TV.

Addressing a gathering in Tehran of Iranian ambassadors and envoys on Tuesday, Shamkhani congratulated the Iraqi people and political groups for choosing Abadi as the country’s next prime minister, IRNA reported.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the constitutional process regarding the appointment of the new Iraqi prime minister," he said.

The Iranian official called on all Iraqi parties and coalitions to maintain their unity in order to protect their national interests and heed Iraq’s sensitive situation to counter foreign threats.

Shamkhani expressed Iran's support for a united and secure Iraq that serves the Iraqi people and promotes its regional position.

On Monday, Iraq’s new President Fouad Massoum nominated the deputy parliament speaker Abadi to form the new government.

In a televised address, Massoum gave Abadi 30 days to form the next government and present it to parliament for approval.

Abadi was nominated for the post by the Iraqi National Alliance, a coalition of Shia parties.
