Baku-APA. The death toll in the illicit liquor incident in northern India has risen to 39, after two more people died during treatment in hospital Saturday, said police, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The incident, which took place in Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh state Friday, was caused by poisoning of dozens of people after drinking spurious liquor supplied to three villages by illegal liquor vendors. All the victims were poor laborers addicted to cheap alcohol.
The liquor was said to contain 90 degrees of recycled spirit in water.
Two of the vendors have been arrested by police while state government has already suspended 11 officials, including five policemen and six tax collectors, charging them with dereliction of duty by not being able to check the supply of illicit liquor.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has taken serious note of the incident, and was personally monitoring the situation.
Illicit liquor incidents take place from time to time in India due to rampant illicit liquor making and selling as well as alcoholism among peasants and laborers.
More than 150 people were killed in an illicit liquor incident in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal in December 2011.
