Former conservative President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has registered as a candidate in the country’s upcoming presidential election, APA reports quoting sputniknews.
Last year, the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, recommended to Ahmadinejad that he not join the field.
Before Ahmadinejad decided to run, many believed the election would be won by incumbent President Hassan Rouhani, who negotiated the nuclear deal with world powers in 2015. Ahmadinejad previously served two four-year terms from 2005 to 2013 pushing forward Iran's nuclear program despite international opposition.
The election on May 19 is seen by many as a referendum on the nuclear agreement and its ability to improve the country's sanctions-burdened economy.
