U.S. officials held talks on Saturday with the authorities in Kabul over Americans held in Afghanistan, the Taliban administration’s foreign ministry said, APA reports, citing Reuters.
Adam Boehler, the Trump administration’s special envoy for hostage response, and Zalmay Khalilzad, a former U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan, met with the Taliban’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.
"Both parties emphasized the continuation of talks on various current and future issues in bilateral relations, particularly regarding citizens imprisoned in each other’s countries," said a statement from the Afghan foreign ministry.
Amir Khan Muttaqi, referring to the previous negotiations held in Doha between the Taliban and the United States, said: “Now there is a favorable opportunity for relations to return to normal, and there is no such complex issue in bilateral relations that would be difficult to resolve.”
According to a statement from the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the head of the U.S. delegation first expressed condolences over the recent earthquake in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces and described his previous visit to Kabul as beneficial. He added that both sides should make greater efforts in future meetings in order to achieve better results.
