Students from Yıldız Technical University and Galatasaray University in Istanbul protested the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu by marching to Saraçhane in the evening hours, APA reports citing Turkish media.

Some students wanted to march from Saraçhane to Taksim. However, the police did not allow this by setting up a barricade. There were clashes between the students, who occasionally charged the barricade, and the police. During those moments, the police used tear gas, and some individuals were at risk of being trampled. Tension and clashes continued intermittently.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that 6 police officers were injured during the students' protest demonstration in a statement regarding the events.

Yerlikaya stated in a message on his social media account: "6 of our police were injured in the protests held this evening in Saraçhane, Istanbul. Our heroic police, who are the guarantee of our country's peace and security, are responding to provocations with great foresight, patience, and common sense; they are demonstrating an exemplary stance on how social events should be managed. Our governor, our police chief, and our police are on duty for the peace and security of our people and will continue to be so. I wish a speedy recovery to the injured police officers."
