“Representatives of various political groups have joined the presidential elections. Therefore there is diversity. From this point of view, I’m going to withdraw my candidacy to create healthy competition and reduce the number of like-minded candidates,” said Mehmanparast.

Mehmanparast resigned from the post of Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman on May 11 and submitted his application to the election headquarters of the Interior Ministry for registration of his candidacy.

Davood Ahmedinejad, brother of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, has also withdrawn his candidacy from the presidential elections.

On May 11, Davood submitted his application to the election headquarters of the Interior Ministry for registration of his candidacy. He was an employee of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and during the first presidency of his brother was the head of Inspection Department of the Presidential Office. But he resigned in 2008. Iranian media reported that he resigned, because of problems with his brother.

Iran's Guardian Council Spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei said that a serious investigation is being carried out on 40 presidential hopefuls.

The presidential elections in Iran will be held on June 14.
