Baku-APA. Yemeni police troops defused a bomb near a police station headquarters in the southeastern province of Hadramout on Tuesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
A high-intensity bomb was found planted near the main gate of a police station headquarters in Qatan area in Hadramout province, the local security official said on condition of anonymity.
Military engineers along with an expert of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad went to the police center and defused the bomb, which was connected to a time device, the security source said.
"The bomb could have caused a major disaster. However, the experts managed to defuse it in time," he added.
Militants of the al-Qaida terrorist group believed to be behind planting the explosive device in order to target military and government officials there, according to local police officers.
The Yemen-based al-Qaida offshoot has exploited Yemen's year- long unrest and controlled several southern cities for more than one year before they were driven out by a U.S.-backed army offensive.
On June 20, Yemen's military officials announced seizing al- Qaida's last bastion in the country's troubled south following the military offensive. However, local military and anti-terrorism experts said the Yemeni al-Qaida branch remained a major threat to the impoverished Arab country.
