Baku-APA. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on Israel and Palestinian resistance movement Hamas to adhere to the terms of a truce deal that brought an end to Tel Aviv’s offensive against the besieged Gaza Strip, APA reports quoting PressTv.

“We urge the parties who agreed to the ceasefire to keep their promises. There may be still challenges in the course of implementing this agreement," Reuters quoted Ban as telling to reporters after talks with King Abdullah in the Jordanian capital Amman on Wednesday.

The UN chief urged the two sides to exercise "maximum restraint and patience with mutual understanding".

"I commend the parties for stepping from the brink and commend President [Mohamed] Morsi of Egypt for his exceptional leadership," Ban said.

"Our focus now must be on ensuring that the ceasefire holds and all those in need in Gaza and there are many receive the humanitarian assistance they need," he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Egypt announced that the Israeli regime and the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas had reached a ceasefire agreement.

Under the deal, Palestinians and Israelis agreed to end all hostilities against each other. Israel also agreed to open all crossings and facilitate the movement of people and goods in and out of the Gaza Strip. But it did not accept to lift the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli regime’s deadly offensive on the blockaded Gaza Strip killed more than 160 Palestinians and injured some 1,200 others since November 14.

In retaliation, Palestinian resistance fighters continued to pour rockets and missiles into the Israeli cities, killing at least five Israelis, including one soldier.
